The Great 7 Stanes Challenge
Have You Got What it Takes?
Are you a mountain biker with a taste for adventure? Have you got what it takes to tackle all the world famous 7stanes in just seven days? ….. Sunday 10 to Saturday 16 April 2011.
If so then this is the challenge for you.
Over the course of the week you’ll ride each of the 7stanes from Glentrool in the west to Newcastleton in the East.
Glentrool – a gentle ride on the Big Country route, 58k of green and blue graded trails with testing climbs leading to magnificent wide open views
Kirroughtree - home to some of the very best single track in the country including the red graded Twister, a 17km physically demanding loop with some real technical challenges
Dalbeattie – don’t be deceived by its relaxed feel and coastal setting - the rough terrain is home to The Slab, the Terrible Twins and Volunteer Ridge
Mabie - fly ‘round the Phoenix, a classic trial with testing climbs, fast descents, berms and water splashes. Or the Kona Dark Side 3.8km orange bike park graded trail with elevated wooden sections and loads of granite outcrops – one for the experts.
Ae - 13.5km of green and blue graded trail, the red-graded Ae Line – Scottish Power Renewables Trail, an aggressive freestyle ride and The Shredder , an orange bike park-graded downhill ride.
Glentress and Innerleithen – they share a stane and an awesome reputation for having some of the best mountain biking around including some great downhill, freeride and the red-graded XC route.
Newcastleton – it’s got the lot including a 16km red route with fast, narrow singletrack crossing bridge and boardwalks.
This challenge includes:
• seven night’s accommodation in Kirkwood Holiday Cottages
• three homemade farm cooked meals a day – including a hearty packed lunch
• daily transport for you and your bike to and from the 7stanes and uplift where you need it
• fellow MTB enthusiasts to share the day’s adventure with
• A certificate to say you made it

The 7stanes are situated in Dumfries and Galloway and the Borders.
They are world class mountain bike trails ranging from easy (green) and moderate (blue) to difficult (red) and black (severe).
There’s also the orange bike parks for the real adrenaline junkies.
The 7stanes Challenge package costs £890pp.
Kirkwood Holiday Cottages are VisitScotland graded (2 star and 3 star) cottages set in the tranquil surroundings of Kirkwood Estate. Normally self catering, but for this week full catered. Bring your own booze.
Cottage facilities include: secure car parking, lockable bike storage, laundry and drying facilities, outside bike wash, games room with full sized snooker table, darts and table tennis.
The Challenge dates are Sunday 10 to Saturday 16 April 2011. Arrival on Sunday (after 4pm) and depart on Sunday (around 10am) all the 7stanes will be ridden in the six days, Monday to Saturday, as two will be combined (probably Glentrool and Kirroughtree) on the same day (probably Wednesday).
• Up at 7.30am
• Breakfast (8am) full cooked breakfast and/or cereals etc
• Make your own packed lunch (rolls with cold meats, salads, pate etc, fruits, cakes, biscuits)
• Depart for Stane 9am. Journey from ½ hour to 1 ½ hours, depending on which location
• Biking for three to six hours
• Return to Kirkwood by say 6pm
• Shower/bath, wash, refresh
• Evening meal 7pm – e.g. cottage pie (using Kirkwood beef) and puddings
Costs are based on your own bedroom in a shared cottage (bathrooms may be shared). Discounts available for those willing to share a bedroom (twin or double).
