Peak Mountaineering

2012 Mountain Biking Courses

Peak Mountaineering offers a range of mountain biking opportunities to suit everyone from beginner to gnarly off road maestro.  Our instructors are all fully qualified biking enthusiasts who live locally-so you can be guaranteed the best quality instruction and guiding.  We know the Peak District has some of the best mountain biking in the world. Let us show you why!

Skills Courses

Both our skills courses are based in the Peak District National Park because it’s got some fantastic terrain and brilliant circular rides for all abilities.  On both courses our emphasis is always on lots of ‘doing’ rather than lots of talking simply because you learn quicker that way – and it’s more fun!  If you don’t have your own bike that’s no problem – we can hire one to you for £20 per day.

1-Day Introductory Skills

Our introductory skills course suits anyone who can ride a bike confidently on roads but hasn’t sampled the delights of off-road riding yet.  We will cover lots of essential skills on terrain that gradually increases in difficulty to let your skills progress at a level that suits you.  We match the ride to the fitness levels within the group but on this course rides will usually be around 15-20km in length.  Skills covered will include:

  • Safety and trail etiquette
  • Basic bike maintenance and set up
  • How to deal with simple mechanical problems on rides and issues to consider when choosing equipment.
  • Introductory climbing and safe descending.
  • Techniques for cornering safely
  • Tackling trail obstacles such as tree roots and drop-offs.
  • Finding information on suitable rides to continue your development

By the end of this course you will be confident to move your riding on and to plan and ride some routes under your own steam – or maybe move on to our intermediate course….

  • Non-residential
  • Mountain bike hire available for £20 per day

2- Day Intermediate Skills

Our intermediate level course is suited to riders who have done a reasonable amount of riding on bridleways and forest tracks and want to move on to more challenging terrain.  The rides we undertake will be on technical ground with plenty of adventurous features to hone your skills!  Rides will be selected to match the fitness levels within the group but will usually be around 25-30km in length. If you don’t have your own bike that’s no problem – we can hire one to you for £20 per day.
Skills covered will include

  • Developing correct body position for technical climbs and descents
  • Climbing techniques for open climbs and technical terrain
  • Descending techniques for open terrain and steep technical terrain
  • How to control speed and pick suitable lines through difficult terrain.

Classic Rides

For the riders out there who have the skills and simply want a top quality guided ride, we offer you the chance to ride some of the best circuits around.  A popular with busy riders keen to sample some of the best rides Northern England and Wales has to offer - we know all the best start points, sneaky shortcuts and café stops and in a day or two with us you will cover a lot of ground and have a lot of fun.
We are obviously big fans of the Peak District with great rides like the Bradwell bikebuster (17km), the super exposed and ultra challenging Kinder circuit (22km and 946m of ascent) or the all time classic Ladybower figure 8 loop (34Km).  But we do also cross the border and run guided trips to Snowdonia (home of The Marin Trail), Mid Wales (land of Coed-Y-Brenin), the Lake District (we love the High Street Ridge ride with 38km of high level cruising), Dalby Forest in North Yorkshire and, infact, the rest of the Yorkshire Dales with over 800km of green lanes, bridleways and byways to explore.
Simply get in touch to discuss your requirements and let us do the rest for you.
